Squirrel corn grows in a moist, humus-rich, neutral soil, in partial to full shade. Found in deciduous forests and rock outcrops. Up to 30 cm tall, this plant produces greenish-white heart-shaped hanging flowers that attract pollinating bees. Blooms early in Spring and goes dormant in summer. Will be dormant at this time of the year.

Seeds are spread by ants. All parts of the plant are toxic.
